The Hero School education Model

About Hero School guatemala

Hero School is Long Way Home’s flagship preK-11th grade school located in San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala. Our local construction crew and more than 4,000 volunteers have transformed 500 tons of rubbish and over 25,000 discarded tires using green-building techniques into a 20-building school complex and education center. Hero School serves as the learning hub for local and international students to become a new generation of innovators and reimagine the way we build our future. Hero School EDUCATION MODEL

In response to the social, economic, and environmental challenges that the rural Guatemalan community faces, Hero School developed a unique pedagogy. Our curriculum blends traditional Guatemalan education, UNESCO standards for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), and green building.

What is ESD?

Education for Sustainable Development is a UNESCO initiative to incorporate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in education. We educate about local and global sustainability topics and shape Hero School education in pursuit of sustainable development by giving our students the skills and opportunities to be agents of change.

Student Projects

Each year, Hero School students, teachers, and green builders collaborate to carry out projects that address sustainability challenges in the community. These projects include smoke-efficient stoves to reduce respiratory illness and protect the environment, water tanks to collect and store rainwater for access to potable water, composting latrines to improve household sanitation, and retaining walls to prevent landslides and erosion, among others. Learn more on our Student Projects page.

Whole School Sustainability

Hero School is an education ecosystem and an epicenter for the exploration of sustainable development. We integrate sustainability into all aspects of our operations. At Hero School we consider the interaction of every link in the chain of our education ecosystem: students, teachers, curriculum, school administration, physical infrastructure, green builders, institutional culture, international volunteers, and local community.
