This January we started out our year with not only a new group of students, but with 2 University groups! University of Maryland Hillel had such a great time last year they came back for some more. Then they were joined by first-timers Dickinson College from Pennsylvania.
Both groups worked extremely hard all week and were led by fantastic leaders that motivated all the way through. They pounded tires, dug ditches, cut and placed shingles for the roofs, mixed and slaked lime, painted the corridor the colors of the rainbow, and more. That was just all they did in construction!! It was also the first week of school for our students here, so the volunteers participated in gym classes teaching them games and running around with the kids.
Dickinson enjoyed their excursion weekend in Antigua while UMD Hillel spent a relaxing Shabbat here in Comalapa. On Sunday, UMD took a day trip to the Iximche ruins in Tecpan and learned about Mayan history.
Thank you again for all your service and positive learning attitudes throughout your stay. We look forward to having both groups join us again next break!!
